There was a story in the Democrat and Chronicle this past week about Jazz90.1. It talked about how WGMC first began in 1973 as a 10-watt student-run station, and how it’s evolved through the years to become what it is today…jazz90.1, heard with a much more far-reaching broadcast signal than what we had back then, and with a potential world-wide audience on the internet at jazz901.org. I remember those days. I didn’t first come to WGMC this past November as the host of the Martial Music Muster, I was actually one of the students who operated the station back in the 1970’s. I got a lot of hands on experience learning about broadcasting, and it led to a long career for me in the broadcasting business. My regular job is at a TV station in town, where I’ve been since 1982. So it was coming back to my roots when I started hosting the Martial Music Muster in November, just a few months ago. Back in the 70’s, we really had no idea what WGMC would eventually become. We had no way of knowing that today…WGMC would be one of America’s few remaining jazz radio stations. And while you may be listening to this show, the Martial Music Muster to hear marching music, we know that people who listen to this show have a real appreciation for music in general. We know that people who play in drum & bugle corps often love jazz because those corps often play jazz selections. And we know that the roots of many jazz styles can be traced back to some of the same roots that martial music comes from. About the Martial Music Muster

So, what exactly is this radio program all about? Martial music is music that is or was meant to be used in military settings. It can be field music, which was used by drums, fifes, bagpipes and bugles to send signals to the troops, or to keep them in step or their minds occupied during long marches. Sometimes it was used to intimidate the enemy. It was also used in military ceremonial occasions or for entertainment. As military communication methods improved over the years, these instruments were no longer needed to send commands to the troops. So martial music became almost exclusively ceremonial and for entertainment. From those military roots, towns and villages formed their own community brass bands, high schools and colleges formed bands to play for their school teams, and the drum & bugle corps movement was spawned. It’s no coincidence that these bands wore uniforms that looked military. Nowadays we have these bands plus historical and reenactment groups that play music the way it was believed to be played back in the day. Since there are no recordings from earlier centuries, we do the best we can at interpreting the sheet music that survived from those times. Some great classical composers were influenced by martial music and wrote their own marches. The Turkish March by Beethoven is one example. The music and instruments continue to evolve. Drum & bugles corps and school bands use some brass and woodwind instruments that were not around in earlier times. Drums with modern hardware and plastic or Kevlar heads have replaced the old rope tension drums with animal skin heads. Bagpipe bands still play traditional music, but their snare drums are wound extremely tight and have snares on both the top and bottom heads. That gives them a very sharp crisp sound. Drum and bugle corps have evolved from doing a military-band like demonstration on the field to modern choreography and they play their interpretations of all types of music.

So, what we’re doing here on the Martial Music Muster can be pretty broad. Fife & drum corps, bagpipe bands, drum & bugle corps, and brass bands are all rooted in ancient martial music. I debated with whether to call this a marching music show, but it goes a little further than that with what was spawned from military ceremonial music and with what modern drum and bugles corps are doing. As a muster, we are gathering all of these types of bands and playing them in one setting. It’s almost like how you would see all of these types of groups gathered together in a parade. But we’re mustering them together for an hour every Sunday morning on WGMC, member-supported Jazz 90.1, and on DAR.FM. I hope you enjoy what we’re doing.

Last Minute Thoughts

Less than 12 hours from now, I will be back on the radio again for the first time in over 25 years. My last radio show was an oldies rock and roll program called The Sunday Night Goldies Show, which was on the same station, WGMC. You can actually hear a recording of that show if you'd like. It's on my website at radio.paulpakusch.com. The web page itself is a bit outdated yet because I haven't changed it to reflect the fact that I'm returning to radio. But I'll get around to it.

A lot has changed since the spring of 1986. WGMC is now best known as "Jazz 90.1" and, except for the weekends, the station plays only jazz. When I first approached management about doing this show, the idea was met with a mix of excitement for the music format idea, but concern that the show would turn off the station's faithful jazz listeners. So I was offered an hour a week on Sunday mornings at 6:00. I accepted it. I am truly not aware of a show like this being done anywhere else. The fact that it is streamed live on the station's website means it can be heard anywhere in the world. People who truly want to hear it will find a way to record it and play it back at a convenient time. For those reasons, the timeslot almost seems irrelevant. In any case, it's on the air, it's exposing this great music, and if the show gets enough positive feedback, who knows where and when it may end up.

I think the biggest change since 1986 is the fact that the internet exists now. I've been able to promote this show in ways that were unimaginable the last time I did a radio show. I've already received a lot of support from people and bands who have supplied us with music to play, information that can be passed along to listeners, and general good wishes that the show goes well. I appreciate all of that!

Now for a funny story: Through the years, I've had this recurring dream that I'm working in a radio station again and that the song on the turntable is about to end. I've been scrambling to find the next record to cue up so there is no dead air. When the agreement to air this show was made, I figured I was due to have one of those dreams again. Sure enough, it happened. Except that now it had a new twist. Back in 1986, most of the music played was still on vinyl records. Now most of the music is played on CD's. In my recent dream, I was scrambling to find the next CD to play, but every time I opened up a CD jacket to take out the CD, a vinyl record popped out!

The first show will feature a sample of what you can expect in the weeks and months to come. We'll have a good mix of martial music as played by brass bands, fife & drum corps, bagpipe bands, drum & bugle corps, and military bands.
